Practice Detail
This scheme has been developed as part of a stepped care programme. It is aimed at providing early intervention for children and young people with mental health and/or behavioural problems. It can also be used by the general public with a view to preventing mental health problems and promoting wellbeing.

A list of self-help books and resources has been compiled following identification of useful self-help resources by members of Lothian CAMHS teams, and input from libraries and health improvement professionals. The identified books and resources will all be available through local library services. The ‘List’ covers a wide range of mental health needs, such as anxiety, depression, grief and eating disorders. There are also numerous resources aimed at parents to tackle childhood problems.

Staff working with children or young people (including GPs, Primary Care Counsellors, Guidance and Voluntary Agency Staff) will be able to recommend a resource from the list when they think it may be useful for the individual or their family. A form will be issued with details of the recommended resource which the individual can take to any participating library. Library membership is not required to borrow the recommended book and an extended loan period will be given. Resources on the list can be used by the general population as well, as they are also good resources for promoting mental health and wellbeing.
