Evidence Base for Practice
The course teaches skills from a robust Psychosocial Intervention Evidence Base. The participants on the course get an opportunity to appraise and fully understand the relevant published literature from which the skills are drawn.
Quality assurance/impact of practice
All students are expected to present to the course a strategy for implimentation of PSI for Psychosis into their workplace / working day and completion is then recorded from the original strategy with significant learnning on the change process made
Practice Summary
A highly regarded course for Mental Health Practitoners. The course focuses on the delivery of Psychosocial Interventions in routine care for people experiencing psychosis and their families/significant others.
Teaching on the course includes sessions by a huge variety of experts in the field of psychosis treatment and research
Practice Detail
The course runs every Friday in Glasgow for 9 months and staff who attend are released by their employers to do so.
The course Lead is a Nurse Consultatn in PSI (Psychosocial Interventions) and the course tutor is a Senior Practitioner in PSI.
In addition to these core staff the course offers full day sessions from a range of professionals involved in the care, treatment and research for people experiencing psychosis including Professor Andrew Gumley whose work in this area is internationally recognised. Service user and carer input is another important aspect of the course and there are two days on the course curriculum which are led by people with lived experience of mental health problems
Core teaching on the course includes collaborative assessment, Family work, developing an understanding of psychosocial models of psychosis, coping strategy enhancement and practical problem solving amongst many other topics.
The course is accredited by Glasgow Caledonian University and students undertaking the course have full access to the facilities within the university. Students gaining academic award on successful completion of the course can use the academic credits they gain to work towards a degree or masters award with the university.
Challenges
For staff juggling a work/life/study balance can be difficult undertaking part-time study, however academic support is available for students and support from managers/workplaces is essential.
